The City of Pembroke Operations Department is committed to ensuring safe and accessible streets and sidewalks throughout the winter season. Our dedicated staff work diligently to provide reliable and efficient winter control services.
Here’s what we do:
- Plowing and treating streets: We plow and treat streets in a prioritized order to ensure safe traffic flow before, during, and after snow events.
- Sidewalk maintenance: Sidewalks are cleared and sanded in a prioritized order to provide traction and safe walking surfaces.
- Winter thaw management: During thaws, staff work to promote roadway drainage and maintain driving surfaces.
- Pre-emptive maintenance: Sometimes streets are pre-treated with materials to prevent snow and ice from bonding, ensuring quicker response times when snow begins.
- Snowbank management: Streets are widened by pushing back snowbanks to improve visibility and ensure adequate snow storage.
- We ask for your cooperation to help us with these essential tasks:
- Avoid on-street parking: Especially during and after snow events, as parked cars make plowing difficult.
- Give sidewalk plows room: Do not park on or too close to sidewalks to allow the sidewalk plows to manoeuvre safely.
- Place bins correctly: Garbage, yellow, blue, and green bins should be set back five to six feet from the curb or roadside, ideally in the driveway, to prevent interference with plows. Do not place bins on the snowbank or sidewalk.
- Keep snow off the roadway: Please shovel or blow snow onto your property, not the road. Keep snow on your property.
We appreciate your understanding and cooperation as we work to maintain safe and clear roadways and sidewalks for all residents of Pembroke this winter.
