Repair work at Kinsmen Pool is near complete.
The Kinsmen Pool will reopen its doors Wednesday January 15th, offering many of its regular swim programs. The opening date, however, will still hinge on Health Unit and Ministry of Labour approvals, scheduled in the coming week. For learn to swim programs, registration will open Monday January 20th. All other program schedules will be released closer to January 15th. The Parks & Recreation department is thrilled to be offering aquatic based programs again to residents of the community.
The work was originally planned to be wrapped up in September, but the project had faced delays for lighting and tile repairs. As a result, the pool’s re-opening had been delayed.
“The ongoing renovations are nearing its end, and we are happy to have established an opening date for safe use of our pool facility,” says Mayor Ron Gervais. “We are excited to finalize the project and see patrons utilize this wonderful community asset again.”
The pool has been closed since January 5, 2024 following reports the facility had progressively worsened over time, as well as concerns about the roof’s ability to handle snow or rain load and heavy winds.
In January of 2024, Council voted to move forward with the $1.4M repairs to the pool building with Township of Laurentian Valley confirming it would contribute up to 30% of the net cost to a maximum of $420,000.
At the March 19, 2024 Parks and Recreation Committee meeting, Council voted to award the contract for the pool repair project, which includes the removal, supply, and replacement and installation of the windows and roof of the existing Butler building. Additional funds to support the project will be provided by the Friends of the Regional Pool, which has a fundraising goal of $200,000. To date the Friends have raised $110,000. Fundraising is ongoing, including their current raffle. Tickets are $20 each or 3 for $50 and are available at Blok Pools, OK Tire, and Sunset Nursery. The committee will also be hosting a trivia night on January 25th at the curling
